Class 2A, No. 2 Triton Central trailed for one-half inning Saturday in the Sectional 42 semifinal game against No. 16 Irvington Prep.
The Ravens scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 advantage, but the Tigers responded with a single run in the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth, and three runs apiece in the final two innings to take a 12-2 victory.
With the win, Triton Central (24-3) punched its ticket into Monday’s Sectional 42 championship game at 1 p.m. against Heritage Christian (18-12), a 7-6 winner over No. 7 Park Tudor in Saturday’s first semifinal game.
Heritage Christian is the defending sectional champion. Triton Central has not won a sectional championship since 2012.
Hayden May earned the win Saturday for Triton Central. The junior pitched the first five innings, allowing two hits and seven walks while striking out nine. Junior Blaine Raider and sophomore Janssen Capps each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to seal the victory.
Weston Smith, Brayden Hoover, May, and Kellan Dishman each had two hits for Triton Central. Smith and May each drove in three runs.
Corbyn Eaton had three hits for Irvington Prep (17-6).
The win sets up a rematch for Triton Central with one of the three teams it lost to in the regular season. The Eagles defeated the Tigers, 15-4, on May 10. Neither of Triton Central’s top two starting pitchers, May and junior Bryce Haney, stepped on the mound that day. Hayden Beaver took the loss with a three-inning performance, allowing three hits, five walks and seven runs (only one run was earned).
Haney, 7-0 this season with a 1.67 earned run average, will likely get the championship game start.
J.P. Olesen earned the win for Heritage Christian over Park Tudor. The senior worked 4.1 innings and allowed eight hits and six runs. Cole Louden pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings and Tyler Allemeier recorded one out.
Heritage Christian could turn to a pair of juniors – Will Ambrose (4-1, 5.35 ERA) or Tripp Vaughan (3-1, 2.12 ERA) – to take on the Tigers.
