Prep Report (Girls): Golden Bears struggle to find success at Wings and Rings Winter Classic

After suffering a pair of losses Friday at the Wings and Rings Winter Classic in Fountain City, Shelbyville girls basketball found itself playing in the seventh-place game Saturday against a top-10 ranked opponent.

In a low-scoring finale for the Golden Bears, Class A, No. 8 Tri defeated Shelbyville 39-33.

Hannah Baker and Maddy Jones each scored 11 points for Shelbyville (7-7), who trailed 21-20 at halftime then was outscored 12-5 in the third quarter and never recovered.

Soraya Cridge topped Tri (11-4) with 13 points. Olivia Parham finished with nine points.

On Friday, Shelbyville got off to a slow start against Class 2A, No. 2 Northeastern, getting outscored 16-5 in the opening quarter and falling 62-35.

Jones made three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 12 points. Baker had seven points and Jayla Ash and Reese Fortune each had six.

Mackenzie Johnson led the Knights with 11 points. Adysson Kircher finished with 10.

Shelbyville returned to the court Friday and lost 52-49 to Fort Wayne Wayne. The game was tied 43-all after three quarters but Ash was the only Golden Bear to score in the fourth quarter.

The freshman finished with a team-high 15 points. Jones had 10 and Fortune added eight.

Kamoni Grayson led Fort Wayne Wayne with 18 points. Davianna Irons finished with 13.

Indianapolis Cathedral defeated Northeastern in the championship game, 65-34. The Irish improved to 9-6 this season. The loss was the first for the host Knights (15-1).

Lafayette Central Catholic topped Kokomo in the third-place game. LCC improved to 12-3 while Kokomo fell to 10-5.

Class 2A, No. 12 Brownstown Central prevailed over Fort Wayne Wayne in the fifth-place game, 47-33. The Braves upped their record to 11-4 while Fort Wayne Wayne fell to 9-6.

Jones (photo, left), who made seven 3s in the two-day event and scored 33 points was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Shelbyville will seek to break its three-game losing streak Friday against Columbus East (1-12) at Garrett Gymnasium.

Greenwood Tournament

Yorktown used a 19-point first quarter to establish a lead over Triton Central it would never relinquish. Yorktown led 19-12 after one quarter and 33-21 by halftime.

Triton Central cut the advantage to 43-34 after three quarters but Yorktown sank 9 of 14 free-throw attempts over the final eight minutes to prevail 62-44.

Lilly Sylvester led Yorktown with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Rylie Johnson finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Claire Hazen had 10 points.

 

 

Maryrose Felling was the only Triton Central player to score in double digits. She finished with 13 points. Quinn King had nine in the loss.

The win advanced Yorktown to the championship game Friday night where it defeated East Central, 42-31. Sylvester had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win that improved the Tigers to 7-5 this season.

East Central defeated Greenwood in the other semifinal, 62-35. The Trojans are 7-6 this season.

In the consolation game Friday, Triton Central cruised to a 59-40 victory over the host Woodmen. Felling had a team-high 15 points and King finished with 10. Eight different Tigers scored in the win.

Maddison Judge led Greenwood (0-14) with 12 points. Eliana Anderson had 10 points.

Triton Central will host Franklin County (6-7) Saturday night in Fairland. The Wildcats won the Waldron Tournament Friday.

Waldron Tournament

Franklin County opened the tournament against the host Mohawks and outscored them by 22 points in the middle two quarters to roll to a 71-50 victory.

Ruby Singer led the Wildcats with 26 points.

 

 

Alivia Fischer and Kiley Best each scored 13 points to lead Waldron.

Union County advanced to the championship game with a 52-19 rout of Hamilton Heights in the other semifinal contest.

Franklin County defeated Union County, 52-41, in the championship. The loss dropped Union County to 9-4.

In the consolation game, the game was tied 38-all after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Hamilton Heights hit 11 of 20 free throws to seal a 61-57 victory.

Katie Brown led the Huskies (4-11) with 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

Best scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Mohawks (5-9). Emerson Lindsey added 14 points.

Waldron returns to action Thursday at Class A, No. 6 Oldenburg Academy (12-1).
