At Jac-Cen-Del Monday, a duel between two of the top Mid-Hoosier Conference pitchers did not disappoint. South Decatur’s Devin Pate and Waldron’s Jacob Bennett combined to strike out 26 batters in the first semifinal contest.

Pate allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 13 and the Cougars took advantage of four Waldron errors to earn a 4-0 victory.

Bennett went the distance and allowed five hits and two walks while striking out 13. Only one of the four runs scored were earned.

Brock Lane had a double and a home run and scored twice for South Decatur (15-5).

Waldron finished the season at 16-9, the most victories for the program since 1986 (16-4).

In the second semifinal, Southwestern avenged a pair of losses earlier in the season and eliminated North Decatur, 3-2.

A two-run sixth inning was the difference for the Spartans. Isaac Bunch had two hits, including a double and drove in a run. Chris Cecil also had a RBI in the win.

Bunch delivered on the mound as well. The junior scattered five hits and one walk while striking out eight Chargers in a complete-game performance.

That win propelled Southwestern into the sectional championship game against South Decatur Monday night.

The Cougars got another strong pitching performance from sophomore J.P. Scudder, who allowed just three hits and one walk, to secure a 4-1 victory and South Decatur’s first sectional championship since 1976.

Scudder collected 11 strikeouts for the Cougars (16-5).

Pate had two hits. Colby Rathburn drove in two runs. Scudder also had a double and RBI at the plate.

Southwestern ended its season with a 5-18 record.
