Prep Report: Hernandez's two goals lift Shelbyville to season-opening victory

Diego Hernandez scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Shelbyville to a season-opening 4-2 win over Franklin Tuesday.

Trailing 2-1 at halftime, Hernandez scored the game-tying goal and eventual game winner in the second half and Logan Addis added an insurance goal.

Gavin Fugate and Aybram Moore each scored goals for Franklin (0-2) in the first half for a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Shelbyville’s first-half goal came from Rory O’Connor.

Girls golf

Connersville 217, Greensburg 225, Southwestern 246

At Greensburg Country Club, Connersville’s Abby Keal shot 49 to lead all the golfers and propel the Spartans to the team victory.

Kahlan Adams topped Greensburg with a 51.

Playing for Southwestern were Aurora Belton (55), Sydney Griffin (56), Taryn Hoeing (67) and Emma Chandler (68).

Boys soccer

Southwestern 6, Shawe Memorial 2

At Southwestern, Jace Patterson scored four goals to lead the host Spartans to a season-opening victory.

Trent Todd and Rafael Trawka also scored for Class A, No. 12 Southwestern. Ethan Sipes had two assists and Michael Clements was credited with four saves in goal.

Tyler Hill and Gus Grote scored goals for Shawe Memorial (0-1).

Indianapolis Ritter 6, Triton Central 0

At Triton Central, the visiting Raiders scored a trio of goals in each half to secure the Indiana Crossroads Conference victory.

Boys tennis

Shelbyville 4, Hauser 1

At Shelbyville, the host Golden Bears dominated the doubles matches and had straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Reece Prickett defeated Hauser’s Hunter Pappano, 6-3, 6-1. Kody Sellers produced a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles for Shelbyville over Graydon Kilps.

Hauser’s lone win came at No. 2 singles where Kameron Blair bested Kashton Laycock, 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong rolled past Jentzen Bechtel and Joel Bechtel, 6-2, 6-1.

Owen Hartman and Jack Van Wye netted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Jayden Blair and R.J. Foster.

Triton Central 5, Indianapolis Ritter 0

At Ritter, the visiting Tigers won all five matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Tucker Hutchinson defeated Noah Geppert, 6-0, 6-0. Janssen Capps blanked Johnny Zore, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. And Bradyn Robinson topped William Gardner, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, the Triton Central pairing of Connor Evans and Max Crouse defeated Luke Rutherford and Andrew Gebhardt, 6-1, 6-1.

Brayden Hoover and Caleb McGuire cruised past Jordan Liefer and Trevor Liston, 6-0, 6-1.

Waldron 5, Madison 0

At Waldron, the host Mohawks lost just six games in sweeping the three singles matches.

Charlie Fischer was successful at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 over Kaid Fink. Lucas Shaw scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mitchell Cammack at No. 2 singles. And Jack Fischer dominated Bodie Harsin, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Cash Young and Jackson Kuhn defeated Brock Brandon and Briar Boldery, 6-0, 7-6 (5).

Matthew Thomas and Lincoln Fischer topped Carson Cammack and Ayden Liter at No. 2 doubles, 7-5, 2-6, 14-12.

Volleyball

Southwestern def. Shelbyville, 19-25, 19-15, 25-23, 26-24, 15-9

At Shelbyville’s Garrett Gymnasium, the host Golden Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not close out the Spartans, who rallied to win the next three sets and steal the victory.

Alivia Lee led Shelbyville (0-2) with 13 kills. Ashlyn Turner followed with 12 kills.

Sydney Haehl had four service aces and a team-high 31 digs. Turner and Lee each had three aces. Turner also collected 20 digs.

Setter Addison Hartman notched 27 assists.
