Prep Report: Morristown begins homestand with MHC win over South Decatur

Morristown started a 3-game homestand Thursday with a Mid-Hoosier Conference win over South Decatur, 59-55.

Kellen Crim and Brayden Keithley combined to hit nine three-pointers and score 45 points to end Morristown’s 3-game losing streak and improve to 8-9 (1-4 MHC).

Crim hit five 3s, including a pair in the fourth quarter when he scored 11 of his game-high 24 points. Keithley made two 3s in the second quarter when he scored 10 of his 21 points.

South Decatur (4-12, 0-4 MHC) led 23-16 at halftime but allowed 43 second-half points which resulted in its third-straight loss.

Four of the Cougars’ five starters scored in double digits led by Lucas Ballard’s 16 points. Drake Scaggs and Karson Templeton each scored 12 and Tayedin Traylor finished with 11.

Morristown hosts Alexandria (4-13) Saturday afternoon.

Triton Central 64, Covenant Christian 57

At Triton Central, Cael Butler and Sam Collier combined for 26 points to keep the Tigers’ goal of winning an Indiana Crossroads Conference championship alive.

Triton Central led at the end of each of the first three quarters then made 9-of-13 free throws in the fourth to pin the first ICC loss of the season on Covenant Christian (12-5, 4-1 ICC).

Eli Sego scored a team-high 18 points for Triton Central (11-7, 2-1 ICC). The junior guard hit 7 of 8 free throws in the decisive fourth quarter.

Butler finished with 14 points, double his season average, while Collier, a 3.5 ppg scorer, had 12.

Isaac Crane scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Warriors.

Triton Central is off until Feb. 14 when it will host ICC leader Indianapolis Ritter (11-5, 3-0 ICC).

North Decatur 59, Waldron 54

At Waldron, a 2-point second quarter by the Mohawks created just enough separation for North Decatur to get the conference victory.

The Chargers (8-10, 4-1 MHC) outscored Waldron 8-2 in the second eight minutes to take a 23-15 lead. The Mohawks cut the advantage to 36-32 after three quarters but North Decatur made 15 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the road win.

Owen Eldridge hit all eight of his fourth-quarter free throws to finish with 17 points. Owen Rennekamp scored eight of his 13 points in the final quarter.

Eli Stewart led Waldron (9-9, 2-3 MHC) with 17 points. Lucas Shaw finished with 16 points.

The Mohawks travel to potential sectional opponent Tri (12-5) Saturday afternoon. The Titans are the only team in the Sectional 59 field with double-digit wins.

Hauser 82, Southwestern 13

At Hauser, the host Jets used a 33-point opening quarter to build a big lead and roll to the victory that secured the MHC championship.

Five different Jets scored in double figures led by Ledger Gelfius and Collin Buck with 14 points apiece. Taeshaun Tungate and Stryker Gill each had 12 points and Kameron Blair finished with 11.

Hauser improved to 14-3 overall and finished 6-0 against MHC opponents to win a second-straight conference title.

Southwestern, playing without leading scorer Ben Kahler in the lineup, dropped to 5-11 (1-3 MHC).

The Spartans are at Indiana Deaf (1-13) on Tuesday.

Girls swimming

New Palestine Sectional

Riley Everette produced a pair of top-three finishes Thursday during the preliminary swimming round of the New Palestine Sectional.

The Shelbyville junior was runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley to earn a spot in Saturday’s sectional championship events.

Everette will be joined in championship races by junior Paige Bohman and freshmen Chloe Claxton and Anne Marie Fansler.

Bohman placed sixth in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle.

Fansler finished eighth in the 200 individual medley and will compete with Everette in the championship.

Claxton placed sixth in the 200 freestyle in her first sectional swim.

All three Shelbyville relay teams also qualified for championship races.

The quartet of Naomi Garringer, Ella Breedlove, Meeghen Bushfield and Addie Stieneker placed fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Everette and Bohman were joined by Emma Wheelhouse and Lilly Connersville to finish fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Everette, Stieneker, Conners and Bohman finished seventh in the 400 freestyle relay.
