Prep Report: Morristown clinches share of MHC championship

Morristown girls basketball has clinched no worse than a share of the Mid-Hoosier Conference title.

The Yellow Jackets defeated North Decatur, 46-41, Tuesday to improve to 9-7 overall and 5-0 in the MHC standings. The loss was the first for North Decatur (10-6, 1-1 MHC) against a conference opponent.

South Decatur (9-9, 2-1 MHC) also has just one conference loss.

Morristown can clinch the MHC title outright on Jan. 23 with a win over Hauser (10-8, 2-2 MHC).

On Tuesday, Nevaeh Sanders finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals to secure Morristown head coach Rachel Kleine career win No. 98.

Danika Rutledge and Neveah Cox each had eight points. Rutledge finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.

Jayla Keithley and Emma Nelson each scored six points.

Taylor University recruit Madi Allen led the Chargers with 26 points.

Morristown begins a 4-game homestand Thursday when Beech Grove (8-8) visits.

Shelbyville 46, Rushville 42

At Rushville, the visiting Golden Bears used a strong third quarter to build a 16-point lead then held off a furious comeback attempt by the Lions.

Shelbyville led 22-19 at halftime then outscored Rushville 16-3 over the next eight minutes.

Charlotte Caviness hit three 3s and three free throws in the fourth quarter to spark the Lions’ late rally. Caviness finished with 12 points.

Carly Senour had a team-high 14 points for Rushville (7-12), who has now lost five straight.

Savannah Collins made three 3s and led the Golden Bears with 14 points. Hannah Baker finished with 11 and Jayla Ash had eight.

Shelbyville (10-8, 3-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) has a key conference game Saturday when Mt. Vernon (13-5, 2-1 HHC) visits Garrett Gymnasium. The Golden Bears and Marauders are tied for second place in the conference standings as the only teams with one loss.

Pendleton Heights (12-6, 4-1 HHC) currently leads the conference. The Arabians are at Shelbyville on Jan. 28.

New Palestine 47, Triton Central 29

At Triton Central, the visiting Dragons limited the Tigers to just two points in the fourth quarter to snap Triton Central’s four-game win streak.

Six different New Palestine players scored in the second quarter to build a 29-19 lead. The Dragons extended the lead to 39-27 after three quarters.

Sadey Hughbanks led New Palestine (8-7), winners of three straight, with 13 points. Gabrielle Brown finished with 10.

Maryrose Felling led Triton Central (11-7) with nine points. With that performance she surpassed Tenleigh Phelps to become TC’s No. 5 career scoring leader at 1,113 points. The junior needs 33 points to move into No. 4 ahead of Kelsey Larkey (1,145 points).

Triton Central hosts Greenwood (1-14) Tuesday. The Tigers defeated the Woodmen, 59-40, on Dec. 27 in the consolation game of the Greenwood Holiday Tournament.
