Prep Report: No. 4 Center Grove defeats Triton Central at tennis regional

Triton Central's No. 1 doubles pairing of Connor Evans and Max Crouse extended the match to three sets before falling to Center Grove's Carson Bush and Daksh Patel which completed the sweep for the No. 4-ranked Trojans.

In the regional semifinal round Tuesday, Center Grove defeated Triton Central, 5-0, and Connersville advanced past Perry Meridian, 4-1, to set up today’s regional championship match at Center Grove.

At No. 1 singles, Center Grove’s Tyler Lane topped Tucker Hutchinson, 6-0, 6-1.

Yuvraj Dasari defeated Janssen Capps at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

And Quinn Smith bested Bradyn Robinson at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Russell Dean and Jack Dybwad blanked Brayden Hoover and Caleb McGuire, 6-0, 6-0.

And Crouse and Evans finally fell, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

The Tigers finished the season 19-3.

In the sectional round of the state singles tournament, also at Center Grove Tuesday, Shelbyville’s Reece Prickett (photo) defeated Franklin’s Folco Cabras, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, to advance to face Roncalli’s Chris Stanley today at Center Grove.

Stanley defeated Decatur Central’s Vincent Murray, 6-2, 6-0.

There will be four teams in the sectional round of the state doubles tournament at Center Grove.

The quarterfinal round match today pits Shelbyville’s Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong (19-2) against Waldron’s Lucas Shaw and Cash Young (13-0).

The winner advances to Thursday’s semifinal round to face a Union County squad.

Perry Meridian’s Vincent Li and Hosea Sang will wait to Friday to compete in the sectional championship match.

Boys Soccer

Center Grove Sectional

Shelbyville 2, Whiteland 1

A pair of first-half goals was enough to get Shelbyville its first sectional match win since 2020.

In the 28th minute of the first half, Diego Hernandez scored on a 20-yard free kick to give the Golden Bears (9-8) the early advantage. Ten minutes later, Hernandez slipped a pass through the Whiteland defense and Logan Addis put it in the net for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Shelbyville’s defense held strong in the second half. Whiteland’s lone goal came from Austin Cooper on a penalty kick in the final five minutes of the match.

The Golden Bears return to Center Grove tonight for a semifinal round battle at 8 p.m. with East Central (11-4-1), a 3-0 winner over Franklin Tuesday.

The other semifinal at 6 p.m. pits Class 3A, No. 15 Columbus North (8-5-1) against No. 1 Center Grove (16-0).

Indianapolis Lutheran Sectional

Morristown 5, Knightstown 1

The Yellow Jackets scored four goals in the first half and pinned a second loss on the Panthers in the last eight days.

Morristown defeated Knightstown, 4-0, on Oct. 1 then ended the Panthers’ season with a strong performance Tuesday.

In the other quarterfinal round match Tuesday, the host Saints, ranked No. 15 in Class A, defeated Central Christian Academy, 8-0.

In the first semifinal game today, Christel House battles No. 5 Greenwood Christian (9-4-2) ahead of Morristown taking on Lutheran (9-5-2).

Girls soccer

Monrovia Sectional

Triton Central 4, Brown County 1

The Tigers scored three second-half goals to secure a spot in the sectional semifinal round.

Rylee Pruitt scored two goals and had an assist to lead Triton Central (9-8). Ariel Walker had a goal and two assists. Bella Ball also had a goal.

Layle McKee was credited with an assist. Cheyenne Allen had nine saves in goal.

The Tigers return to Monrovia Thursday to face Hauser (3-11-4).

In today’s sectional quarterfinal matches, Providence Cristo Rey takes on Class A, No. 3 Monrovia and Indianapolis Washington battles Greenwood Christian Academy.

Volleyball

Oldenburg Academy def. Waldron, 25-15, 25-14, 25-18

At Oldenburg Academy, Ali Nobbe and Rachel Suttmann each had 11 kills to lead the Twisters to the win.

Haley Hoffman had a team-high five service aces and Campbell Miles and Lillian Vanderpohl combined for 25 digs for Oldenburg Academy (18-8).

Waldron suffered its fourth-straight loss to fall to 3-22.

New Palestine def. Shelbyville, 25-14, 25-15, 25-20

At New Palestine, senior Josie Corbett had 11 kills and seven aces to lead the Dragons to the win on Senior Night.

Natalie Sevier finished with 13 kills and Sam Gooding had 34 assists.

New Palestine improved to 27-3 this season and 4-2 against Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents.

With the loss, the Golden Bears dropped to 5-20 (0-7 HHC).
