Prep Report: Shelbyville baseball routs Speedway at Barnett Field

Shelbyville baseball scored nine runs in the first inning Friday at Barnett Field and cruised to a 17-0 win over visiting Speedway.

Grantland Fitzgerald had a double, scored two runs and drove in three for the Golden Bears (4-3). Wes Bailey and Dalton Jones each had two RBI.

Gavin Reed pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed one hit and struck out three before giving way to Luke Coomes, who pitched two scoreless innings, and Charles Graham, who pitched a scoreless fifth and final inning.

Logan Moore did not make it out of the first inning and took the loss for the Sparkplugs (1-6-1).

Shelbyville is at Pendleton Heights (7-0) Tuesday.

Baseball

Triton Central 11, Eastern Hancock 10

At Triton Central, the host Tigers pushed a run across home plate in the bottom of the sixth to win a high-scoring game with the Royals (1-4).

Eli Sego, Nick Riggins (three RBI), Weston Smith, Hayden May and Bryce Haney each had two hits for Triton Central (5-2).

Janssen Capps pitched 3.1 innings in relief of starter Blaine Raider and earned the win, allowing three hits, one walk and two unearned runs.

Hayden Rouse hit two home runs for Eastern Hancock and finished with six RBI.

Triton Central is at Indianapolis Scecina (3-4) Tuesday.

Southwestern 8, Waldron 3

At Waldron, James Oliver and Kaden Barlow combined to limit the Mohawks to three runs and earn the Spartans a split of the Mid-Hoosier Conference series.

Oliver pitched six innings and struck out nine to earn the win. Barlow pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Hunter Dodson took the loss for Waldron (3-3, 1-1 MHC).

Clayton Randolph, Isaac Bunch, Brady Mitchell and Oliver each had two hits for Southwestern (3-2, 3-1 MHC).

The Spartans travel to Morristown (1-4) Thursday.

Waldron hosts Jac-Cen-Del (4-1) Tuesday.

Track and field

Bill Self Invitational

At Franklin, Shelbyville produced two event winners and finished fourth in the boys team standings.

Blake Hughes won the 400 meters in 50.87 seconds. Jaylen Eads cleared 12 feet, six inches to win the pole vault.

Franklin edged Batesville, 125.5-122.5, to win the event. Perry Meridian (111) was third, just ahead of the Golden Bears (104).

Shelbyville got runner-up performances from Logan Page (5-8 in high jump), Christian Powell (23.59 in 200) and Reuben Martins-Thomas (41-8 in shot put).

Shelbyville’s 1,600 relay team of Isaac Zermeno, Powell, Page and Hughes finished second in 3:32.41.

Franklin won the girls team title with 154 points. Shelbyville finished sixth (43.5).

Macey Robbins produced the Golden Bears’ best finish – second in the 800 (2:31.26).

Park Tudor Showcase

Zeke Robertson continues to lower the Triton Central record in the 300 hurdles. He won the event at Park Tudor in 39.37 seconds.

Triton Central’s other event winner was Willy Baugh in the shot put. He cleared 50 feet for the first time with a best throw of 50-5.

Braden Brown finished runner-up in the high jump (5-10) and combined with Landon Slone, Cash Compton and Robertson to finish second in the sprint medley relay (800 meters) in 1:35.98.

Triton Central’s best finish in the girls meet was fourth in the sprint medley relay. Farah Coen, Lydia Hough, Layla Compton and Aubrie Propp crossed the finish line in 2:01.85.

Knightstown Invitational

Waldron got individual event wins from Lucas Shaw and Riley Price.

Shaw won the high jump competition with a best clearance of 5-10. Waldron’s Ethan Moody also cleared 5-10 but Shaw cleared it on his first attempt while Moody needed three attempts to get the height.

Price won the girls 800 meters in 2:43.04.

Waldron’s only other event win came in the 1,600 relay where Moody, Shaw, Jared Crosby and Tad Crosby stopped the clock at 3:38.3.

Waldron also got runner-up finishes from Brooklyn Milbourn (30-5.5 in shot put; 85-9 in discus), Cole Jones (41-0 in shot put), Luke Meyers (114 in discus), Jared Crosby (24.25 in 200), Shaw (45.19 in 300 hurdles), Tad Crosby (53.95 in 400) and the girls 3,200 relay team (12:16.5) of Kassidy Meulen, Jackie Corlett, Averi Scheele and Price.

Boys volleyball

Mooresville def. Shelbyville, 25-11, 25-16, 25-17

At Mooresville, the Golden Bears’ two-match win streak came to an end against the Pioneers (6-5).

Corbin Deck led Shelbyville (4-8) with five kills, two service aces, and four digs.

Shelbyville hosts Warren Central (4-9) Monday.
