New Palestine 6, Shelbyville 5
At New Palestine, the visiting Golden Bears scored four runs in the top of the first inning but broke down defensively (five errors) and allowed the Dragons to come all the way back for the Hoosier Heritage Conference win.
Brock Kuhn had a two-run single in the first inning and Luke Jackson drove in two more with a triple to get Shelbyville (2-1, 0-1 HHC) off to a fast start.
Aiden Smith took the mound and limited the Dragons to three hits and struck out seven over four innings of work but three unearned runs crossed the plate.
Shelbyville did not score again until the top of the fifth but Kohen Myers, who took over the pitching duties in the fifth inning, could not keep New Palestine at bay.
The Dragons scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh off a pair of sacrifice flies to win their season opener.
The two teams are scheduled to play today at Barnett Field in Shelbyville to complete the HHC series.
