Prep Report: Shelbyville cross country makes season debut at Plainfield Relays

Shelbyville High School’s cross country teams made their 2024 season debut Saturday at the Plainfield Relays.

Teammates were paired together to run the course relay style to combine for the fastest overall time.

Logan Reinhart and Shia Veach finished 30th in the boys varsity 6-mile race in a combined time of 33 minutes, nine seconds.

Shelbyville’s top girls pairing was Aerin Garcia-Santiago and Macey Robbins, who placed 21st overall in 39:26.

The Golden Bears will travel to Franklin Saturday for the Franklin Invitational.

Boys soccer

Shelbyville 6, Indian Creek 3

At Indian Creek, the visiting Golden Bears built a 3-0 lead at halftime on a pair of goals by Diego Hernandez and an early goal from Joao Rivera.

Rivera notched his second goal of the game in the second half and Rory O’Connor and Brock Wischmeyer added insurance goals to improve Shelbyville to 2-0 this season.

Indian Creek (2-1) got two goals from Kaden Martin and another from Aiden Long.

Shelbyville rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit in the junior varsity match to steal a 4-3 victory. Ryan Nigh scored twice and Iran Daza and Jay Kawakami also found the back of the net.

Girls soccer

Shelbyville 5, New Castle 1

At Shelbyville, Hannah Baker scored a pair of goals to net the host Golden Bears their first Hoosier Heritage Conference victory of the season.

Shelbyville improved to 2-1 (1-0 HHC).

Connersville 4, Triton Central 3

At Connersville, Ariel Walker scored all three goals for the visiting Tigers (1-3).

Connersville scored three times in the first half and added the game-winning goal in the second half to secure the victory.

Sophia Starr scored twice for the Spartans, who improved to 3-0 this season. Chloe Keal and Kennedy O’Toole also scored goals.

Connersville won the junior varsity match 6-1.

Boys tennis

Shelbyville Invitational

Indianapolis Chatard defeated Greensburg, Batesville and the host Golden Bears to claim the team title.

Shelbyville’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong finished the event with a 2-1 record. Their only loss came in three sets.

At No. 2 doubles, Shelbyville’s Owen Hartman and Jack VanWye went 1-2, winning a three-set match and losing a three-setter.

Reece Prickett went 1-2 in the event at No. 1 singles for the Golden Bears.

Volleyball

Covenant Christian Invitational

Triton Central split a pair of matches to qualify for the third-place match at the Covenant Christian Invitational.

In the third-place match, Herron held off the Tigers (3-3) in a hard-fought match.

Triton Central opened the invitational with a 25-4, 25-12 loss to Greenfield-Central. Madison Sonsini led the Cougars with nine kills.

The Tigers rebounded for a straight-set win over East Chicago Central.

Greenfield-Central defeated Guerin Catholic in the championship match. Covenant Christian bested East Chicago Central in the fifth-place match.

Cross country

Jeremy Wright Invitational

At Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville, Morristown placed 21st in the boys high school meet while Southwestern placed 27th overall.

For Morristown, Lakshdeep Singh finished 38th in a time of 19 minutes, 21 seconds.

Jackson Bentz was the first Southwestern runner to cross the finish line. He placed 68th in 20:39.

Triton Central had one entrant – Max Tupper (23:48).

In the girls meet, Morristown finished eighth in the team standings.

Grace Laughlin led the Yellow Jackets with a 20th-place finish in 23:39. Her teammate, Audrey VanDyke, was 21st in 23:59.

Southwestern’s Kyndra King finished 120th in 33:30.

In the junior high boys race, Gavin Bailey of Triton Central finished 35th in 13:31. Morristown’s Carter Bell was 41st in 13:44. Southwestern’s Wyatt Smith placed 87th in 15:14.

With three runners finishing in the top 20, Morristown captured the junior high girls championship.

Jo Kuhn led the Yellow Jackets with a 7th-place finish in 13:16. Bailey Willard (14:16) and Gracie Theobald (14:19) followed in 16th- and 17th-place, respectively. Aleah Hauk was 25th (14:59). Macy Schultz placed 33rd in 15:22. Rylan Carlton (15:49), Madison Richardson (15:55), Greenly Theobald (17:11) and Lizzi Atkins (17:52) also competed for Morristown.

Triton Central’s Dannahi Lopez was 37th in 15:35. Southwestern’s Addi Brewer placed 78th (17:59).
