Prep Report: Shelbyville ends 3-game losing streak with dominant win over Columbus East

For the second time this season, Shelbyville ended a three-game losing streak with a strong performance.

Maddy Jones made five three-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to lead Shelbyville to a 70-37 win Friday over Columbus East at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

Jayla Ash finished with 15 points and Addy Marshall scored 11 to improve the Golden Bears to 8-7 this season.

Kimberly Carothers led Columbus East (1-13) with 11 points. Averie Graham had 10 points.

Shelbyville is at Southport (8-5) Wednesday.

Boys basketball

Waldron 59, Brown County 49

At Brown County Friday, Lucas Shaw scored a season-high 31 points to lead the visiting Mohawks to the win.

The senior had 12 points in the final quarter to help hold off the Eagles. Parker Douglas and Eli Stewart each had eight points.

Quentin Bell topped Brown County (3-5) with 13 points. Cash Harden finished with 11.

Waldron (5-5) is at Triton Central (5-5) Friday for a semifinal game in the Shelby County Tournament.

Tri 52, Morristown 49, OT

At Tri Friday, the Titans needed overtime to dispatch of the Yellow Jackets.

Bryant Cornelius and Eli Murphy combined to score 21 points, including five in the extra session, to improve the Titans to 7-1 this season.

Gracen Huffman led Tri with 12 points. Cornelius finished with 11 and Murphy had 10.

Brayden Keithley hit three 3s and scored all 16 of his team-high points in the second half to lead Morristown (4-5). Owen Rinzel and Kellen Crim each had 10 points.

Morristown travels to Fairland Friday to face Southwestern (2-6) in the semifinal round of the Shelby County Tournament.

Indianapolis Roncalli 48, Triton Central 42

At Triton Central Friday, the visiting Royals used a big second quarter to get the lead in Fairland then held off the Tigers.

Triton Central led 12-7 after one quarter then was outscored 20-4 in the second quarter. Eli Sego scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the third quarter to cut Roncalli’s lead to 38-34.

Will Hegwood scored seven of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to improve Roncalli to 9-1 this season. Noah Schmaltz added 11 points.

Silas Blair finished with 12 points for Triton Central (5-5), who hosts the Shelby County Tournament Jan. 9-11.

The Tigers open the tournament Friday against Waldron (5-5).

Girls basketball

Oldenburg Academy 60, Waldron 26

At Oldenburg Academy Thursday, the Class A, No. 6 Twisters scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a 34-14 lead at halftime.

The Twisters (13-1) then outscored the Mohawks, 19-6, in the third quarter and rolled to their 12th straight win.

Gina Grote led Oldenburg Academy with 16 points. Rachel Suttmann finished with 15 and Addisyn Lambert had 14.

Emerson Lindsey led Waldron (5-10) with 10 points.

Waldron heads to Fairland Thursday to face Southwestern (2-14) in a semifinal round game of the Shelby County Tournament.

Johnson Memorial Health Classic

Southwestern finished 0-3 at the holiday tournament in Edinburgh.

Class 2A, No. 4 Austin opened the tournament Thursday with a 75-23 win over the Spartans. Brynn Owens scored a game-high 31 points for Austin (15-1).

Tanna Tatlock hit 8 of 12 free throws and finished with a team-high 10 points.

In game two, Columbus HomeSchool defeated Southwestern, 59-40. Tatlock again made 8 of 12 free throws and scored 18 points. Hayden Ramey finished with nine points.

On Friday, the Spartans closed out the tournament with a 38-33 loss to Hagerstown.

The Tigers outscored Southwestern 15-2 in the second quarter and never let the Spartans regain the lead. Mackenzee Johnson led Hagerstown (1-14) with 15 points.

Tatlock scored a game-high 17 points. Maci Murray finished with eight points.

Southwestern takes on Waldron Thursday in the semifinal round of the Shelby County Tournament.
