A four-run third inning proved to be just enough to get Shelbyville softball its second win of the season.
In the Golden Bears’ home opener Tuesday against Seymour, sophomore Gracie Crafton went the distance and struck out 10 in a 4-3 victory.
Shelbyville (2-0) scored first in the bottom of the third inning with five consecutive hits off Seymour starting pitcher Phoebe Underwood. A Reagan Dillon double turned the lineup over to get the Golden Bears rolling.
Leadoff hitter Anna Shearer made it back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 advantage. Destiney Johnson singled to score Shearer. Addie Stieneker tripled to extend the lead to 3-0. Crafton followed with a single that proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Owls (3-1) responded in the top half of the fourth with all three of their runs.
A leadoff single by Abby Followell was followed by run-scoring doubles from Underwood and Taylor Stuckwisch to cut the Shelbyville lead in half. Stuckwisch would score on a wild pitch to again cut into the lead.
Crafton shut down the rally from there and faced just 10 batters over the final three innings. She allowed four hits and hit two batters in her longest outing as a Golden Bear.
