Prep Report: Shelbyville wins home opener over Morristown

Hannah Baker and Maddy Jones combined to score 28 points Saturday at William L. Garrett Gymnasium to lead Shelbyville to a 57-30 victory over Morristown.

Jones sank three 3-pointers in the second quarter to help the Golden Bears (2-0) extend a 14-7 lead after the first break to 31-13 at halftime.

Baker added four made field goals in the second quarter and finished with 13 points. Jones led Shelbyville with 15 points.

Savannah Collins and Jayla Ash each scored eight points in the home opener for Shelbyville.

Danika Rutledge led the visiting Yellow Jackets (1-3) with 13 points. Emma Nelson hit a trio of 3s for nine points.

Morristown is at Union County (1-0) Tuesday.

Shelbyville hosts Class 3A, No. 1 Greensburg (4-0) Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Oldenburg Academy 67, Southwestern 21

At Southwestern Saturday, Oldenburg Academy sophomore Gina Grote made six 3s on the way to a game-high 28 points.

Rachel Suttman had 12 points in the win for the Twisters (2-1), who scored 48 first-half points.

Tanna Tatlock led the Spartans (1-3) with 10 points. Maci Murray had five points.

Southwestern is at Crothersville (1-2) Thursday.

Eastern Hancock 60, Triton Central 53

At Eastern Hancock Saturday, Triton Central never held the lead at the end of a quarter and continue to search for its first win of the season.

McKenzie Koch scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the second half to get Class 2A, No. 6 Eastern Hancock to 4-0 this season.

Bella Sotelo tallied eight of her 12 points in the second half and Kiersten Judd finished with 10 points.

The Royals led 18-8  after one quarter and 27-19 at halftime. The Tigers won the third quarter 14-10 to cut the lead to three but the Royals scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to hold off the Tigers (0-3).

Maryrose Felling only scored four points in the opening two quarters but sank three 3s in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 21 points.

Sawyor Murdick added nine points. Sophia Burbrink and Layla Compton each had six points.

Triton Central won the junior varsity game, 37-32.

The Tigers open their Indiana Crossroads Conference schedule Wednesday at Monrovia (0-2).

Waldron 53, Southwestern 31

At Waldron Friday, Kiley Best scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Mohawks to their first victory of the season.

Jackie Corlett and Emerson Lindsey each scored 10 points for Waldron, who limited Southwestern to 10 second-half points.

Tanna Tatlock hit 11 of 12 free throws and led the Spartans with 17 points. Maci Murray followed with five points.

Waldron is at Hauser (2-1) Friday for a Mid-Hoosier Conference contest.

Speedway Invitational

Triton Central’s Zoie Gray pinned all three of her opponents in the first quarter to win the 190-pound bracket Saturday.

Gray needed a total of 58 seconds to pin Owen Valley’s Maisy Pendleton and Logansport’s Juliana Rincones to reach the championship match.

Gray added her third pinfall in 1:51 on Greencastle’s Gracie Means to capture the title.

Also scoring top-four finishes Saturday for Triton Central were Ahna Ashman (125 pounds) and Aubrie Propp (105).

Triton Central finished seventh in the team standings.
