Prep Report: Shelbyville's Veach sets new personal best at Franklin Invitational

Shelbyville cross country produced a pair of top-12 finishes Saturday in the Franklin Invitational.

The event started 90 minutes late due to inclement weather in the area but that did not slow down Shia Veach, who dropped 44 seconds off his personal-best time and just missed earning a ribbon.

Veach completed the five-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 19 seconds to place 19th overall in a field of 215 runners.

Waldron’s Will Larrison finished 35th in 17:47.

Also competing for Shelbyville, who finished 11th in the team standings, were Logan Reinhart (54th in 18:17), Nick Childers (122nd in 20:18), Kendryk Pike (144th in 21:08), Kale Chaney (168th in 22:15), Isaac Zermeno (177th in 22:38), Gavin Harker (178th in 22:43), Kenneth Wright (179th in 22:57), Gage Harker (181st in 23:04), Anderson Mollenkopf (182nd in 23:12), Everett Stegemiller (194th in 24:35) and Austin Boring (201st in 26:07).

Waldron finished 15th in the team standings. Also competing Saturday were Jared Crosby (63rd in 18:27), Nathaniel Evans (120th in 20:15), Spencer Armstrong (147th in 21:20) and Jacob Kuhn (158th in 21:35).

Shelbyville’s girls program finished 12th in the team standings led by Aerin Garcia-Santiago’s 43rd-place finish in 22:35. Also running for the Golden Bears were Paige O’Connor (93rd in 25:36), Claire Kamplain (100th in 26:05), Kathryn Seal (106th in 26:30), Cora Flynn (121st in 28:21), Avery Keller (124th in 28:35), Haylee Barnes (138th in 29:40), Diana Gasca (140th in 29:43) and Elizabeth Nicolas (151st in 34:11).

Waldron had just one competitor – Kassidy Meulen, who finished 80th overall in 24:30.

Rushville Invitational

Triton Central had two boys compete Saturday in Rushville.

Hunter Franklin placed 51st overall in 20:38.94. Max Tupper followed in 78th in 22:28.58.

Boys soccer

Southwestern 10, Austin 0

At Austin Friday, Jace Patterson and Trent Todd combined for five goals and two assists to lead Class A, No. 10 Southwestern to the road victory.

The Spartans improved to 4-0.

Patterson scored three goals while Todd netted two. Each had an assist in the win.

Also scoring goals for the Spartans were Josh Karr, Rafael Trawaka, Bruce O’Brien, Cecil Newton, Michael Clements, Brayden Elliot, Ethan Sipes and Landon Drake.

Austin dropped to 1-5.

Wapahani 3, Morristown 1

At Wapahani Saturday, the host Raiders scored all three goals in the second half to secure the win over the Yellow Jackets (1-2).

Caden Smith, Gabe Peters and Kaleb Keihn each scored goals for Wapahani (3-1).

Volleyball

Southwestern def. Morristown, 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13

At Southwestern Friday, the host Spartans overcame a 2-0 deficit for the second time this season against a Shelby County foe and defeated Morristown.

Brooklyn Carlton led the visiting Yellow Jackets (4-4, 1-1 Mid-Hoosier Conference) with 10 kills and five service aces. Olivia Rude and Avery Everhart each had five kills.

Kindall Dorsey finished with a team-high 27 digs and Katie Theobald collected 18 assists.
