Prep Report: Strong fourth quarter nets Morristown win over Union County

Morristown scored more points in the fourth quarter than it scored in the first three combined and that led to a win Saturday over Union County.

The low-scoring affair was tied 19-all after three quarters before the Yellow Jackets scored 21 fourth-quarter points to seal a 40-34 victory that ended a three-game losing streak.

Brayden Keithley scored eight of his game-high 12 points in the fourth quarter to improve the Yellow Jackets to 9-12. Kellen Crim and Colin Kieninger each scored nine.

Logan Boone led Union County (10-11) with 11 points. Fenton Coyle finished with 10.

Morristown closes out its regular-season schedule Friday at Elwood (5-15).

Boys basketball

Southwestern 57, North Decatur 51

At Southwestern Friday, the host Spartans outscored the Chargers 18-11 in the final quarter to take the Mid-Hoosier Conference victory.

Ben Kahler scored 10 of his game-high 20 points to lead Southwestern (9-11, 3-3 MHC) to its fourth-straight victory. Mitchell Clements tallied eight of his 19 points in the final quarter and Jace Patterson sank a trio of three-pointers in the second quarter on the way to 13 points.

Owen Rennekamp topped North Decatur (11-12, 4-2 MHC) with 15 points. Logan O’Dell finished with 10.

North Decatur won the junior varsity contest, 67-32. Landon Drake led the Spartans with 10 points.

Southwestern has a busy final week of the regular season with three games. The Spartans are at MTI Knowledge (5-12) Monday and Oldenburg Academy (12-8) Tuesday before hosting Anderson Prep (17-5) on Friday.

Beech Grove 45, Triton Central 37

At Beech Grove Friday, the Hornets’ balanced offensive effort was enough to defeat the visiting Tigers.

Bishop Moore (12 points), Tyris Reid (11) and Anthony Huff (10) each scored in double digits and TyQuan Lee had nine to improve Beech Grove to 8-14 (5-2 Indiana Crossroads Conference).

The Hornets led 11-5 after one quarter and 26-16 at halftime.

Silas Blair led Triton Central (12-9, 3-3 ICC) with 13 points.

Eli Sego scored 11 to surpass 1,000 career points in three seasons at Triton Central. Sego, a junior, is the sixth Tiger to surpass 1,000 points and the first to accomplish the feat since Jordan Tandy (1,019) in 2000.

Triton Central ends its regular-season schedule Friday at Speedway (2-18, 2-4 ICC).

Liberty Christian 55, Waldron 52

At Liberty Christian Friday, Kendrick Martin scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help the Lions hold off Waldron.

Lucas Shaw led the visiting Mohawks (11-10) with 18 points. Eli Stewart and Max Jones each finished with eight points and Parker Douglas had seven.

Waldron’s regular season ends Friday at home against Sheridan (15-5).

New Palestine Sectional

Shelbyville sophomore Brody Jeanette scored a pair of top-7 finishes Saturday in sectional championship races.

Jeanette placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.37, touching the wall just .01 behind New Palestine’s Luke Appleby for fourth place.

In the 500 freestyle, Jeanette stopped the timer at 5:12.17 for a seventh-place finish.

Shelbyville’s 200 medley relay team of Anderson Mollenkopf, Kendryk Pike, Jeanette and Everett Stegemiller finished sixth (1:53.16).

The Golden Bears’ 400 freestyle relay team of Tully Hardwick-McKee, Stegemiller, Shia Veach and Mollenkopf placed eighth (3:59.63).

Also competing Saturday in consolation races were Stegemiller (12th in 200 individual medley; 11th in 100 butterfly), Mollenkopf (14th in 100 freestyle; 10th in 100 backstroke) and Veach (15th in 100 breaststroke).

Veach, Pike, Hardwick-McKee and Paul Duffy finished ninth in the 200 freestyle relay.
