Prep Report: Strong serving propels Southwestern volleyball past Medora

Southwestern volleyball earned its ninth win of the season Tuesday with a 25-4, 25-13, 25-11 victory over Medora.

Tanna Tatlock led the Spartans (9-6) with six kills, five service aces and seven digs. Jaden Freese followed with five kills and nine aces.

Claire Utley had six aces to contribute to the Spartans’ 25 total aces in the win over Medora (2-7).

Southwestern has won six of its last seven matches.

In other prep events Tuesday:

Girls golf

Southwestern 217, Indian Creek 218, Edinburgh Inc.

At Timbergate Golf Course, Southwestern had three golfers finish within two strokes of each other to hold off Indian Creek, who had the individual medalist.

Taryn Hoeing led Southwestern with a 51 and Sydney Griffin (52) and Aurora Belton (53) were close behind. Olivia Lahey completed the Spartans’ scorecard with a 61.

Indian Creek’s Emily Hogue was the medalist with a round of 48. Allison Vaul shot 51. Also competing for Indian Creek were Shelby Roach (57) and Haylie Knight (62).

Macie Blandford led Edinburgh, who only had three golfers, with a 56.

Boys soccer

Batesville 3, Shelbyville 2

At Shelbyville, Rory O'Connor scored the only goals for the Golden Bears (4-4).

Batesville improved to 7-3 and avenged a Shelbyville Invitational loss to the Golden Bears in penalty kicks on Aug. 31.

Girls soccer

Speedway 5, Triton Central 1

At Triton Central, Rylee Pruitt’s second-half goal off an assist from Ariel Walker helped the Tigers (4-4, 2-2 Indiana Crossroads Conference) avoid the shutout.

Speedway evened its record at 4-4 and is 4-1 against ICC opponents.

Pendleton Heights 4, Shelbyville 0

At Pendleton Heights, Gracie Coleman’s goal late in the first half turned out to be all the Arabians needed to secure the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

Pendleton Heights (3-4-1, 3-0 HHC) scored two goals in less than 40 seconds near the mid-point of the second half to extend the lead to 3-0.

Boys tennis

Waldron 4, Rushville 1

At Waldron, the host Mohawks swept the doubles matches and got singles victories from Charlie Fischer and Jack Fischer to complete the victory.

At No. 1 doubles, Lucas Shaw and Cash Young defeated Jacob Schwendenman and Aiden Philpot, 6-1, 6-0. Jackson Kuhn and Lincoln Fischer produced a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Brady Martz and Edgar Fernandez.

Charlie Fischer rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Wes Mauzy while Jack Fischer bested Mason Mosburg, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Rushville’s lone win came at No. 3 singles where Clayton Chase topped Matthew Thomas, 6-4, 6-2.

Waldron is 7-2.

Triton Central 5, Hauser 0

At Hauser, the visiting Tigers (9-1) won all five matches in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Tucker Hutchinson defeated Hunter Pappano, 6-1, 6-2. Janssen Capps and Bradyn Robinson lost a total of four games in securing wins at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles, respectively.

At No. 1 doubles, Connor Evans and Max Crouse topped Jentzen Bechtel and Joel Bechtel, 6-1, 6-2.

Brayden Hoover and Caleb McGuire defeated Jayden Blair and R.J. Foster, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Greensburg 3, Shelbyville 2

At Shelbyville, the host Golden Bears (3-9) won both doubles matches but could not secure a singles victory to defeat the Pirates.

At No. 1 doubles, Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong prevailed, 6-3, 6-1.

Owen Hartman and Jack VanWye needed three sets for a No. 2 doubles victory, 7-5, 5-7, 10-3.

Reece Prickett, Kashton Laycock and Kody Sellers were defeated in singles matches.

Volleyball

New Castle def. Shelbyville, 25-13, 25-9, 25-10

At New Castle, Alivia Lee led the Golden Bears (2-8, 0-2 HHC) with four kills and two aces.

Sydney Haehl finished with a team-high 13 digs.

New Castle improved to 6-3 (1-0 HHC).
