Prep Report: Trio of Shelby County runners secure top-10 finishes at Whiteland Invitational

Shelbyville sophomore Shia Veach broke the 17-minute mark and finished fifth overall Saturday at the Whiteland Invitational.

Veach stopped the clock in 16 minutes, 58 seconds to finish 14 seconds behind race winner Colton Watson (16:40) of Whiteland.

The Golden Bears placed ninth in the team standings and had another top-20 finisher in junior Logan Reinhart (18:08). Also running for Shelbyville were Blake Hughes (62nd in 20:00), Ethan Coffey (71st in 20:22), Christian Powell (78th in 20:44), Kendryk Pike (84th in 20:57) and Everett Stegemiller (86th in 21:04).

Morristown finished 11th in the boys team standings. Ryan Crisman and Lakshdeep Singh (photo, below) placed 53rd and 54th overall in 19:31.50 and 19:31.96, respectively. Also running for Morristown were Bradley Theobald (116th in 22:38), Carter McGuire (131st in 24:18) and Evan Trittipo (146th in 28:44).

 

 

Competing for Southwestern were Chris Claiborne (114th in 22:02), Max Wilson (137th in 24:57), Sam Wilson (138th in 25:00) and Gavin Harrison (150th in 31:35).

Shelbyville placed seventh in the girls team standings, led by Macey Robbins’ 14th-place finish in 21:51. Also competing for the Golden Bears were Paige O’Connor (33rd in 23:08), Avery Keller (59th in 25:10), Kathryn Seal (60th in 25:15), Cora Flynn (63rd in 25:25), Claire Kamplain (66th in 25:34) and Diana Gasca (79th in 26:49).

 

 

Morristown was 10th overall. Audrey VanDyke (photo, above) (27th in 22:54) and Grace McLaughlin (35th in 23:11) had top-40 finishes. Also running for Morristown were Brooke Kuhn (51st in 24:17), Remi Spicklemire (91st in 28:45) and Savannah Theobald (101st in 30:33).

Southwestern’s participants were Kaylee Pike (94th in 29:16), Kyndra King (109th in 33:07) and Bethany Woodhouse (116th in 37:31).

Shelbyville’s America Leon-Torres and Morristown’s Jo Kuhn each had top 10-finishes in the girls middle school race.

Leon-Torres finished fifth in 12:19. In her previous meet, Leon-Torres clocked 12:12 to break the Shelbyville Middle School record set by Danielle Lubbe in 2013.

Kuhn placed 10th in 13:00. Bailey Willard (21st in 13:44) and Gracie Theobald (23rd in 13:47) also had top-25 finishes for Morristown.

Girls golf

Hoosier Heritage Conference Tournament

At Albany Golf Club, New Palestine golfers produced four of the top eight scores to secure the conference championship by 11 strokes over runner-up Mt. Vernon, 338-349.

Pendleton Heights was third at 385 followed by Yorktown (396), Delta (402, New Castle (414), Greenfield-Central (438) and Shelbyville (441).

New Palestine’s Lauren Deering was crowned HHC champion after shooting a five-over par 77.

Maddy Jones led Shelbyville with a 105. Emmie Higgins was one shot back at 106.

Mid-Hoosier Conference Tournament

At North Branch (Meadow Bridge), North Decatur was crowned conference champion with a 423. Southwestern was runner-up (432). Hauser finished third at 480.

Golfers from Morristown and Edinburgh also competed despite neither team fielding a full squad.

Edinburgh’s Macie Blandford was the only golfer to break 100 to earn the MHC title with an 86. Southwestern’s Taryn Hoeing and Sydney Griffin and North Decatur’s Macy Kinker each shot 102 to finish second in the individual standings.

Also competing for Southwestern were Aurora Belton (110) and Emma Chandler (118).

Morristown’s Clara Hale shot 108 and Jorja Geise carded 132.

Boys soccer

Shelbyville 1, Yorktown 0

At Yorktown, despite an 18-7 shot advantage for Shelbyville, the two teams played a scoreless 90 minutes of soccer.

The Golden Bears finally broke through in overtime when Aiden Helfer-Vazquez’s corner kick found Richard Lira for a header at the back post and the match’s only goal.

Shelbyville improved to 5-5 (2-1 HHC). Yorktown slipped to 3-5-1 (2-3 HHC).

Providence Cristo Rey 4, Morristown 1

At Morristown, the visiting Wolves scored three second-half goals to secure the victory and improve to 5-3.

Francisco Vazquez scored two goals for Providence Cristy Rey. Dylan Mondragon had a goal and Rolando Sotelo scored and had three assists.

Milan 1, Triton Central 0

At Milan, the host Indians improved to 3-3-1 this season with their second shutout victory.

Triton Central dropped to 1-8-1.

Girls soccer

Delta 3, Shelbyville 0

At Shelbyville, Jordan Bunch scored a goal and had an assist on another goal to lead the visiting Eagles to the HHC victory.

Nila Johnson and Shiloh Bunch also had goals for Delta (6-2, 2-1 HHC).

Shelbyville (4-7, 1-4 HHC) has lost four straight and has been shut out five times this season.

Boys tennis

Shelbyville Invitational

The host Golden Bears secured wins over Columbus East and East Central before falling to Seymour, 4-1. The Owls finished the event with a 3-0 record.

Shelbyville’s lone win against Seymour came at No. 1 doubles where Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong completed a perfect day going 3-0.

Reece Prickett and Kody Sellers each won singles matches against the Olympians and Trojans before suffering losses against Seymour.

Shelbyville’s No. 2 doubles team of Owen Hartman and Jack VanWye went 2-1 and Kashton Laycock finished 1-2 at No. 2 singles, collecting his first varsity victory of the season.

Volleyball

Noblesville Invitational

Shelbyville defeated Western in three sets but were swept in two sets in matches against the host Millers (25-12, 25-10), Union County (25-16, 31-29) and Jay County (25-19, 25-19).

In the Golden Bears’ 20-25, 25-19, 16-14 win over Western, Alivia Lee had a team-high seven kills and added four service aces and six digs. Reese Fortune had five kills while Sydney Haehl collected 25 digs.

Against Noblesville, Lee had four kills while Lyla Wilson finished with three kills.

In the loss to Union County, Lee and Fortune each had three kills. Haehl had a team-high 15 digs and Hayden Ricketts added 12 digs.

In the invitational finale against Jay County, Lee and Ashlyn Turner each had four kills. Haehl served four aces and had eight digs.

The Golden Bears (4-11) celebrate Senior Night Tuesday at Garrett Gymnasium against Greensburg (11-4).

Southwestern Invitational

The host Spartans defeated Crothersville and Columbus Christian to reach the championship match before falling to Oldenburg Academy, 25-18, 25-21.

Rachel Suttman led the Twisters with nine kills. Campbell Miles backed her with eight kills, four aces and 12 assists.

Southwestern is 11-8 this season.

Trinity Lutheran def. Triton Central, 25-9, 25-19, 25-20

At Trinity Lutheran, Carson Bowling and Madison Keith each had 11 kills for the host Cougars (11-6).

Addison Darlage collected six aces and 36 assists. Laura Roeder notched 15 digs.

Triton Central dropped to 9-6.
