Prep Report: Triton Central captures Shelby County Volleyball Tournament championship

Triton Central defeated Morristown and Waldron Saturday to claim the Shelby County Volleyball Tournament Championship.

At Morristown, the Tigers opened the tournament with a 25-6, 25-21 victory over the host Yellow Jackets.

Abby Hawk led Morristown (11-18) with three kills in the loss. Zoey Coons had two kills, two service aces and 11 digs. Kindall Dorsey finished with a team-high 13 digs.

Waldron upset Southwestern in the other semifinal, 25-20, 27-25. The Spartans defeated Waldron, 3-1, on Oct. 4.

Alivia Fischer led the Mohawks in the semifinal with five kills and two aces. Lilli Lozier finished with four kills, two aces and 11 digs. Emerson Lindsey had 10 digs.

Tanna Tatlock topped Southwestern (15-15) with 10 kills, three aces and six digs. Ruby Garner had five kills and five digs.

Triton Central prevailed in the championship over Waldron, 25-17, 25-10.

Lozier led the Mohawks (4-23) with four kills. Lindsey and Fischer each had three kills. Lozier and Lindsey combined for 18 digs.

 

 

Gwyn Williams (photo), a junior, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Triton Central’s match statistics were not available.

With its two wins, Triton Central improved to 17-11.

Girls soccer

Monrovia Sectional

Monrovia 7, Triton Central 1

Emery Newlin had four goals to lead Monrovia to the sectional championship.

Gaby Esguera had two goals and Ann Standeford scored to improve Monrovia to 18-1 this season.

Ariel Walker scored Triton Central’s only goal off an assist from Rylee Pruitt.

The Tigers finished the season at 10-9.

Volleyball

Lawrence North Invitational

Shelbyville finished 0-4 at the invitational to close out its regular-season record at 6-24.

The Golden Bears lost to the host school, 25-17, 25-17. Lyla Wilson and Alivia Lee each had five kills for Shelbyville.

Southwood defeated Shelbyville, 25-7, 25-7. Ashlyn Turner had a team-high three kills for the Golden Bears. Kali Laycock had 10 digs.

East Central swept the Golden Bears, 25-12, 26-24. Lee collected seven kills and three aces.

New Albany closed the event with a 25-10, 25-13 victory over Shelbyville. Lee had three kills.

Cross country

Mid-Hoosier Conference Championship

At Greensburg Elementary School, Morristown had three of the top six finishers in the girls race but did not have enough runners to field a team score.

Audrey VanDyke won the race in 22 minutes, 37 seconds. Grace McLaughlin was runner-up at 22:50 and Brooke Kuhn followed in sixth place in 24:12.

Waldron also had three participants – Riley Price (4th in 23:56), Jackie Corlett (14th in 26:53) and Sophie Hudnall (17th in 27:27).

Southwestern was represented by Kyndra King (23rd in 30:37).

North Decatur won the MHC title with 16 points. South Decatur was the only other school to field a full team.

Hauser had four of the top six finishers in the boys race to capture the team title. The Jets’ 28 points bested Waldron (44), North Decatur (68) and Morristown (86).

Hauser’s Nolan Dailey won the race in 16:52.

Waldron’s Jared Crosby (17:37) and Will Larrison (17:49) were second and third, respectively, ahead of Hauser’s Mason Moore (18:16) and Max Moore (18:20).

Also running for Waldron were Nathaniel Evans (8th in 18:41), Jacob Kuhn (15th in 19:48) and Spencer Armstrong (19th in 20:56).

Morristown had a pair of top-10 finishers in Ryan Crisman (9th in 18:45) and Lakshdeep Singh (10th in 18:48). Also scoring points were Bradley Theobald (22nd in 21:56), Armaan Singh (26th in 23:42) and Evan Trittipo (31st in 25:11).

Competing for Southwestern were Chris Claiborne (18th in 20:56), Max Wilson (29th in 24:35) and Sam Wilson (30th in 24:55).

With the top-three finishers, Morristown captured the girls junior high team title. Jo Kuhn (12:45), Bailey Willard (13:13) and Gracie Theobald (13:13) led the Yellow Jackets.

Two more Morristown runners placed in the top 10 – Aleah Hauk (8th in 14:11) and Lizzy Atkins (10th in 14:23).

Waldron’s Anna Stanton produced a fifth-place finish in 13:26.

Hauser won the boys team title with four of the first six runners across the finish line.

Morristown’s Jasen Tweedy (11:58) and Jack Hauk (12:56) finished third and sixth, respectively.

Dragon Invitational

At New Palestine, Shelbyville’s girls program placed third in the seven-team field.

The host Dragons won the event with 34 points. Beech Grove (60) , Shelbyville (67) and Martinsville (73) also had complete teams. Non-scoring teams were Cascade, Greenwood Christian and Indianapolis Lutheran.

Macey Robbins led Shelbyville with a fifth-place finish in 21:49. Also competing for the Golden Bears were Paige O’Connor (11th in 23:13), Aerin Garcia-Santiago (24th in 24:58), Kathryn Seal (26th in 25:10), Claire Kamplain (30th in 25:52), Cora Flynn (33rd in 26:12) and Diana Gasca (35th in 26:38).

Shelbyville finished third in the boys’ team standings. New Palestine took first with 25 points. Cascade was second at 44 followed by Shelbyville (98), Greenwood Christian (102) and Martinsville (112). Beech Grove did not field enough runners for a team score.

Logan Reinhart led the Golden Bears with an eighth-place finish in 18:36. Also running were Blake Hughes (25th in 20:21), Gavin Harker (26th in 20:25), Christian Powell (30th in 20:40), Ryan Chaney (32nd in 21:00), Kendryk Pike (33rd in 21:06) and Anderson Mollenkopf (39th in 21:44).
