Prep Report: Triton Central tennis advances past Shelbyville in sectional opener

Triton Central advanced to the semifinal round of the IHSAA Shelbyville Girls Tennis Sectional Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the host Golden Bears.

Triton Central was victorious at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles and added a three-set win at No. 2 doubles to secure the victory.

Shelbyville’s only singles win came from Ava Muckerheide at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Shelbyville Sydney Baker and Sophie Asher won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 7-5, and advanced to the state doubles sectional tournament next week at Center Grove.

Baseball

Shelbyville 3, Greenfield-Central 0

At Barnett Field in Shelbyville, Gavyn Fisher twirled a four-hit shutout to get the Golden Bears a split of the Hoosier Heritage Conference series with the Cougars (10-12, 7-7 HHC).

Grantland Fitzgerald had two hits and scored twice on singles by Dalton Jones and Brock Kuhn.

Shelbyville improved to 14-8 and closed its HHC schedule with a 9-5 record.

Softball

New Palestine 9, Triton Central 0

At New Palestine, University of Kentucky recruit Allie Blum smashed two home runs and drove in seven of the Dragons’ nine runs.

Blum had three hits in the win and scored two runs to push Class 4A, No. 3 New Palestine to 19-3 this season.

Cailyn Hurst limited the Tigers (14-7) to two hits over six innings and struck out eight. Sadey Hughbanks pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Brylie Couch took the loss for Triton Central, allowing six hits and nine runs (five earned).

Girls track and field

Warren Central Sectional

Shelbyville freshman hurdler Sonora O’Connor finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 48.36 to just miss the automatic regional qualifying spot. She could still be added to the regional field if hurdlers opt out of the race. O’Connor also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.94).

Shelbyville senior Ava Wilson finished fifth in the 200 meters in 27.4.

Shelbyville freshman Alyna Castanon placed eighth in the 400 (1:05.46) and eighth in the long jump (14-9).

Triton Central’s Vivian Blye finished sixth in the 200 (27.53) and Farah Coen placed eighth in the shot put (30-0).

Morristown’s Brooklyn Carlton finished seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.99) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (51.49).

Also for Morristown, Anna Osborne was seventh in the long jump (15-4.75) and Kindall Dorsey was seventh in the discus (85-5.5).

Warren Central won the sectional team title with 146 points. Franklin Central was runner-up at 145.5.

Shelbyville finished seventh at 25. Morristown (11) was eighth and Triton Central (4) was 10th.
