Shia Veach continues to lower his personal-best time in an impressive showing to start the cross country season.
The Shelbyville sophomore (photo) crossed the finish line Saturday in 16 minutes, 22 seconds to finish 40th overall at the Rick Weinheimer Invitational in Columbus, Indiana. Veach’s time is the fastest by a Shelbyville boys cross country runner since 2013.
The Golden Bears placed 20th in the larch school “AA” division. Also running for Shelbyville were Logan Reinhart (17:44), Gavin Harker (19:57), Ethan Coffey (20:10), Kendryk Pike (20:16), Christian Powell (20:22), Blake Hughes (20:55), Ryan Chaney (21:14), Isaac Zermeno (21:36) and Nick Childers (21:40).
Shelbyville’s girls cross country team finished 19th. Competing for the Golden Bears were Macey Robbins (21:16), who finished 75th in the “AA” race. Aerin Garcia-Santiago finished 85th (21:38) and was followed by Paige O’Connor (23:10), Kathryn Seal (24:18), Claire Kamplain (25:07), Haylee Barnes (25:47), Diana Gasca (26:21), Avery Keller (26:26) and Courtney Gross (28:52).
Waldron’s Will Larrison placed fourth in the “A” boys race. He crossed the finish line in 16:46. Also running for Waldron were Jared Crosby (23rd in 17:47), Nathaniel Evans (18:48) and Jacob Kuhn (20:25).
Morristown was represented by Lakshdeep Singh (18:36), Ryan Crisman (18:54) and Armaan Singh (21:11).
Competing for Southwestern were Jackson Bentz (19:40) and Chris Claiborne (20:41), Maxmillian Wilson (24:32), Samuel Wilson (25:41) and Gavin Harrison (28:41).
Five Shelby County runners placed in the top 50 in the “A” girls race. Morristown’s Grace McLaughlin led that quintet with a 31st-place finish in 22:44.
Also in the top 50 were Morristown’s Audrey VanDyke (32nd in 22:53), Waldron’s Kassidy Meulen (34th in 22:59) and Riley Price (42nd in 23:23) and Morristown’s Brooke Kuhn (48th in 23:32).
Also running for Morristown were Remi Spicklemire (28:06) and Savannah Theobald (28:10).
Southwestern was represented by Kaylee Pike (28:36), Kyndra King (28:37) and Bethany Woodhouse (34:36).

Boys soccer
Herron 4, Southwestern 1
At Southwestern Friday, Jace Patterson gave Class A, No. 9 Southwestern the lead near the mid-point of the first half but Andrew Ball tied the match before halftime and the Achaeans scored three goals in the second half to pin the first loss of the season on the Spartans (6-1).
Goals by Calvin Meek, Spenser Godsen and Aiden Crtejer helped Herron improve to 2-5 this season.
Shelbyville 4, Delta 3
At Delta Saturday, the visiting Golden Bears recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the second half to steal the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.
Joao Rivera scored off an Eli Slaven assist with four minutes left to tie the match, then Rivera set up Diego Hernandez 58 seconds later for the game winner.
Hernandez scored the game’s first goal on a penalty kick.
Maddox Huffman scored the next three goals for Delta (4-3, 0-2 HHC).
Aiden Helfer-Vazquez converted another penalty kick for Shelbyville (4-3, 1-0 HHC) to start the comeback rally.
Girls soccer
New Palestine 7, Shelbyville 0
Tylar Whitaker spoiled Shelbyville’s debut game at McKeand Stadium.
The New Palestine senior scored three goals and had two assists to improve the Dragons to 7-1 (4-0 HHC).
Gabrielle Brown had two goals and two assists and Shaylee Frank and Abby Lambdin collected goals to keep New Palestine on top of the HHC standings.
The Saturday morning contest was Shelbyville’s only scheduled appearance this season on the artificial turf at McKeand Stadium.
Boys tennis
Shelbyville 3, Batesville 2
At Batesville, the visiting Golden Bears (3-8) won both doubles matches and got a straight-set win at No. 1 singles to avenge an earlier season loss to the Bulldogs.
Reece Prickett was victorious at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Wyatt Armstrong and Aiden Alton played together for the first time this season and won, 7-5, 7-5.
Owen Hartman and Jack VanWye needed three sets to secure a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
Zack Lakes and Drake Tillison won junior varsity matches for Shelbyville.
Volleyball
Shelbyville def. Morristown, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18
At Garrett Gymnasium, Ashlyn Turner and Alivia Lee combined for 26 kills to lead the Golden Bears to their second-consecutive victory after starting the season 0-6.
Turner finished with a match-high 14 kills and added three service aces and 12 digs to her stat line. Lee had 12 kills, five aces and nine digs.
Sydney Haehl led Shelbyville with 25 kills. Kali Laycock had 18 digs. Setter Addison Hartman collected 25 assists.
Avery Everhart led the Yellow Jackets (4-7) with eight kills. Olivia Rude finished with six kills. Zoey Coons and Kindall Dorsey each had 15 digs. Katie Theobald notched 16 assists.
Rising Sun def. Waldron, 25-17, 25-17, 25-11
At Rising Sun Friday, Liv Graver and Ryan Works each had nine kills to lead the Shiners (6-3) over the Mohawks (1-9). Graver also had eight aces and six digs.
Emerson Lindsey led Waldron with five kills and 12 digs. Lauren Strehle finished with four kills, seven digs and 16 assists.
