Prep Report: Waldron, Morristown split Military Night victories

Max Jones scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead Waldron to a 46-38 victory Friday on Military Night at Morristown.

The win was the first for the Mohawks this season and the first varsity coaching victory for new head coach Jeb Stewart.

Morristown’s Kellen Crim scored seven points in the first quarter to give the Yellow Jackets an 11-5 lead.

Four different Mohawks scored in the second quarter to take a 17-15 halftime lead.

Eli Stewart hit a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter to help Waldron extend the lead to 35-30.

Both teams combined to shoot 20 free throws in the fourth quarter but Waldron hit enough (5 of 11) to hold off the Yellow Jackets.

Jones and Stewart led Waldron with 10 points apiece. Lucas Shaw finished with nine. Seven different Mohawks scored in the win.

Crim topped Morristown with 16 points.

Morristown (1-4) hosts Blue River Valley (1-4) Saturday afternoon in its final game before the Christmas break.

Waldron (1-3) hosts Milan Tuesday.

In the Military Night girls game Friday, a strong second quarter performance allowed Morristown to pull away from Waldron for a 73-40 victory.

Nevaeh Sanders led the Yellow Jackets with 31 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Danika Rutledge had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Emerson Lindsey and Kiley Best each had 12 points for Waldron. Alivia Fischer finished with 11 points.

Waldron (4-6) hosts North Decatur (5-4) Friday. Morristown (5-6) hosts Southwestern (2-9) Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Greensburg 52, Triton Central 51

At Triton Central Friday, Jack McKinsey and Jacoby Miller each scored 18 points to lead the visiting Pirates to the victory in Fairland.

Miller sank three 3s in the opening quarter to get Greensburg (2-2) a 16-10 lead at the first break.

Eli Sego scored eight of his team-high 19 points for Triton Central in the second quarter but the Tigers still trailed 28-26 at halftime.

McKinsey made three 3s in the third quarter and the Pirates opened up a 46-38 advantage.

Max Crouse connected on a pair of 3s in the fourth quarter but the Tigers’ comeback attempt fell short. Crouse finished with 13 points. Silas Blair had 12.

Lance Coy added 11 points for Greensburg.

Triton Central (3-2) hosts potential sectional opponent Christel House (2-3) Friday.

KIPP Indy Legacy 97, Southwestern 73

At Southwestern Friday, Nick Mapp, Shalon Robinson and Jahmere Evans combined to score 78 points to keep the Pride (4-0) unbeaten this season.

The trio combined to make nine 3s and 15-of-21 free throws to secure the road victory.

KIPP Indy Legacy trailed Southwestern 21-10 after one quarter then outscored the Spartans 87-52 over the final three quarters.

Ben Kahler led Southwestern with 27 points. Avery Dennison had 13. Mitchell Clements and Clayton Randolph each finished with eight points.

KIPP Indy Legacy won the junior varsity game, 60-52. Dusty Stevens led Southwestern with 20 points. James Oliver had 17.

Southwestern (0-4) is at Waldron (1-3) Saturday.

Girls basketball

Triton Central 68, Southwestern 20

At Southwestern Saturday, Maryrose Felling scored 17 of her game-high 34 points in the first quarter to lead Triton Central to its third-straight win and back to .500 (5-5) after starting the season 0-4.

Felling added 17 more points in the second quarter to get the Tigers a 51-10 halftime advantage.

No other Tiger scored in double digits but nine contributed points in the win.

Tanna Tatlock led Southwestern with 13 points.

Southwestern (2-9) travels to Morristown (5-6) Tuesday.

Triton Central hosts Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter (4-6) Tuesday.

Wrestling

Indiana Crossroads Conference Tournament

At Beech Grove, Triton Central finished runner-up in the team standings for the inaugural ICC girls wrestling tournament.

Triton Central’s Zoie Gray (190 pounds) and Kahli Shaw (235) won their respective weight brackets.

Triton Central had runner-up finishes from Aubrie Propp (105), Harper Young (110), Ahna Ashman (125) and Olivia Schaadt (140).

Frankfort Invitational

Shelbyville finished 0-5 at the invitational with losses to Lebanon (70-0), Frankfort (41-18), Sheridan (71-6), Parke Heritage (58-12) and North Central (78-6).

Kamden Turner (157 pounds) and Reuben Martins-Thomas (175) had a pair of pinfall victories for the Golden Bears.
