Shelbyville seniors Anna Shearer and Destiney Johnson had four extra-base hits and nine runs batted in Friday to lead the Golden Bears to an 18-3 win over Delta.
The win was Shelbyville’s third Hoosier Heritage Conference win of the week in which it outscored the opposition, 35-8.
Shelbyville (7-5, 3-0) was scheduled to play at Yorktown (4-1, 1-0 HHC) Saturday morning but inclement weather forced the postponement of that game. It will be played at a later date.
The Golden Bears scored three runs in the first inning off Delta starting pitcher Katelyn Burns, capped off by a two-run home run by Shearer – her first of the season.
Shelbyville sent 18 batters to the plate in the second inning and forced Delta to use three pitchers to finally end the onslaught.
Johnson doubled twice in the inning and drove in four runs. Shearer (photo) reached on a fielder’s choice in her first trip to the plate then smashed a two-run home run that made it 18-0.
Two batters earlier, Addie Stieneker delivered her third home run of the week.
The Golden Bears had nine hits in the win and benefited from nine walks.
Gracie Crafton (7-4) pitched the first two innings and allowed one hit and struck out six before turning the pitching duties over the Sydney Brown, who pitched the final three innings, struck out three and did not allow an earned run.
Shelbyville has five non-conference games scheduled for the upcoming week beginning Monday when Greenwood (3-5) visits.
