Shelbyville's Bryant reaches semistate quarterfinal round before season ends

Shelbyville junior Brady Bryant could not get a win in the “ticket round” Saturday afternoon at the New Castle Semistate to bring an end to the wrestling season in Shelby County.

Bryant was one of three area wrestlers seeking a state finals berth Saturday in New Castle.

Competing at 157 pounds, Bryant defeated Parke Heritage’s Carson Rolison 11-5 to advance to the quarterfinal round.

That win paired him against Milan’s Kaleb Wilburn, ranked No. 17 in the state. Wilburn defeated Pendleton Heights’ Jackson Gipson, 17-1, in his first match.

In the “ticket round,” Wilburn secured a first-period pinfall over Bryant to reach the semifinals. Bryant finished the season with a 38-8 record.

Triton Central’s Dayne Bailey, competing at 175 pounds, lost to East Central’s Brody Wingate 13-10 in his opening match. Bailey closed out the season at 21-10.

Shelbyville sophomore Reuben Martins-Thomas had the toughest draw, opening against No. 5 ranked Kyle Harden of Indianapolis Cathedral. Harden pinned Martins-Thomas in the first period to advance.

Martins-Thomas was 18-15 this season.
