A Golden Bear and a Tiger will compete in the inaugural IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Finals.
Shelbyville sophomore Jessica Price finished third Friday at the Mooresville Regional while Triton Central sophomore Zoie Gray was runner-up Friday at the Alexandria Regional.
Both earned berths in the State Finals which will be held Friday at Corteva Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center.
Triton Central freshman Aubrie Propp also competed at the Alexandria Regional and lost her opening-round match at 105 pounds to Lawrence North’s Azariah Dembry.
The top four finishers at each of the IHSAA’s four regional sites – Goshen, Rochester, Alexandria and Mooresville – advanced to the state championship meet.
Competing at 190 pounds, Gray (main photo, right) won her first three matches to advance to the championship match.
She opened the bracket with a pinfall win over Lawrence North’s Ace Grayson.
Gray followed that up with a pinfall win over Jay County’s Amara Crawford which made her Triton Central’s first ever girls wrestling state finalist.
In the semifinal round, Gray pinned Indianapolis North Central’s Jaleese Taylor.
In the championship, Warren Central’s Jazmine Hollins-Rowie pinned Gray to win the regional championship.
Price (photo, far right) won her first two matches at 105 pounds at Mooresville to earn her a spot in the state championship meet. She is the third Golden Bear to reach the state finals and the first since the sport was granted inclusion into the IHSAA sanctioning body.
She opened her bracket with an 11-6 win over Madison’s Maya Bullock. She followed that with a 13-10 decision over Mooresville’s Miia Williams.
In the semifinal round, Price was pinned by North Posey’s Kenna Kleinschmidt.
Price returned to the mat for a third-place match where she pinned Floyd Central’s Scarlett Rudnick.
In the championship, Whiteland’s Kaitlynn Fouty defeated Kleinschmidt, 13-6.
The brackets for the state finals have not yet been released. The one-day event begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the Parade of Champions.
The first round begins at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinals and semifinals to immediately follow.
The consolation round is slated to begin at 4:15 p.m.
The state championship matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
