FAIRLAND – Triton Central put together a near-perfect performance Monday to collect its third-straight Shelby County Boys Basketball Tournament championship.
The Tigers made 29 of 35 shots (83%), including 10-of-14 three-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws, to run away from Morristown, 75-29.
Triton Central junior Eli Sego, who made 10 of 11 shots, including four 3s, and had five rebounds, five steals, three assists and three blocks was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
“My teammates got me open. I was able to catch and step,” said Sego. “I’ve been rushing my shot and not hitting, but the last couple of games I’ve been slowing down and my teammates have been getting me open. It’s easy to knock them down when people set you up.”
The stellar performance was marred by an early second quarter injury to Triton Central senior Silas Blair, who suffered a left ankle injury. He tried to return to the game after getting the ankle taped but could not continue.
The Tigers led 19-13 when Blair went to the trainer’s room. From there, TC closed out the quarter on a 15-6 run that left the Yellow Jackets down 34-17.
The Tigers scored the first 12 points of the third quarter that included 3s from Cael Butler, Max Crouse and Sego and a traditional 3-point play from Nate Long, who scored off an offensive rebound and was fouled.
Morristown (5-6) failed to score in double digits in any of the four quarters and took just 28 shots all game.
Brayden Keithley followed up a strong showing Saturday in the Yellow Jackets’ semifinal win over Southwestern, with a 13-point game Monday in Fairland.
Morristown’s two leading scorers, Kellen Crim and Colin Kieninger, were held to a combined nine points of 2 of 9 shooting.
The Yellow Jackets can quickly shake off the loss Friday with a home game against Knightstown (2-8) followed by a road trip Saturday to Traders Point Christian Academy (4-6).
The 2025 Shelby County Tournament Most Valuable Players are Maryrose Felling (left) and Eli Sego.
In the tournament, Sego scored 51 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out eight assists and produced seven steals.
“I tried to set the tone from the get-go,” said Sego. “It’s sets our team up too. When we are aggressive from the start, we’ve played super well. When we get off to slow starts, it’s hard to get back into the games.”
Ten different Tigers scored in the win but only Sego reached double figures. Butler came off the bench to score nine points and get two assists. Gavin Morgan added eight points off the bench.
Blair and Max Crouse each finished with six points.
Triton Central (7-5) has two more games this week – Friday at potential sectional opponent Heritage Christian (5-5) before hosting Milan (4-4) Saturday.
Seven of the Tigers’ remaining games after that are against Indiana Crossroads Conference foes.
