After splitting the first two sets at No. 1 singles, Tucker Hutchinson produced a third-set win to defeat Waldron's Charlie Fischer, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 to help Triton Central capture the Shelbyville Tennis Sectional title.
The Tigers got wins Friday at No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles to defeat the Mohawks (13-5) for the third time this season.
The sectional title is the seventh for the Tigers and first since 2021. They will face No. 4 Center Grove Tuesday in one semifinal match of the Center Grove Regional. The other semifinal will pit Perry Meridian against either Connersville or Rushville, who will compete for the Connersville Sectional title Saturday at 10 a.m.
Hutchinson’s win improved him to 18-5 this season.
At No. 2 singles, Janssen Capps pushed his record to 20-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jack Fischer.
Triton Central’s No. 2 doubles team of Brayden Hoover and Caleb McGuire defeated Matthew Thomas and Jackson Kuhn, 6-2, 6-1. Hoover and McGuire are now 19-2 this year.
Lincoln Fischer defeated Triton Central’s Bradyn Robinson at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
And with a win at No. 1 doubles, Waldron’s Lucas Shaw and Cash Young improved to 13-0 and advanced to the state doubles tournament next week at Center Grove. Shaw and Young defeated Max Crouse and Connor Evans for a third time this season, 6-1, 6-4.
Shaw became the Waldron tennis program’s career wins leader Friday with 65, surpassing Brandon Dalley’s record of 64.
Shaw and Young could be headed for a showdown with Shelbyville’s Aiden Smith and Wyatt Armstrong, 19-2 this season, at the state doubles tournament sectional.
Shelbyville’s Reece Prickett also will travel to Center Grove next week to compete in the state singles tournament. Prickett is 11-11 this season at No. 1 singles.
